- ASL 2--American Sign Language Class
- 9:00 am – 11:00 am
-
125 Hunt Drive, Hubert, NC
(MAP)
- This is a 12 week class that will start on January 13 and will end on April 6 (I will be out of town on January 27, no class that day). This class is for older elementary - high school children that have completed the ASL 1 Class. The class is $50 a week, divided by the students (if there are 7 children, the class is $7.50 per child).
In this class Ms Katie will be teaching vocabulary, grammar, and Deaf culture. The children will have homework (not every week but she will ask them to review/study during the week), at least one report, and an end of the semester "project." We will do review every week and we will be playing games (sign language bingo, sign language memory, etc.) because the kids learn a lot (AND IT STICKS!!!) with the games. Students do not have to buy any books (they are expensive). There are a lot of great resources online that will suffice for homework. I also have a good number of books and other recources here that we can use during class. I do ask that the kids bring some paper and a pen/pencil for class. I give a lot of handouts and worksheets so a binder really helps too.
The class is taught by Katie Ely: "I'm a military wife, my husband and I moved to the area from Mississippi last summer. I went through the Interpreter Training Program in Gulfport MS and have my AA in interpreting. I felt God calling me to work with the deaf in our church back home in Biloxi 5 years ago and have been signing since. At first I worked with a deaf child at church, then after my education I interpreted the services to the deaf in our church. Now in Hubert I work with a 2 yr old who has hearing loss and teach ASL in my home."
For more information or to register for the class, please contact Ms. Katie. Please contact her soon if you would like your child to participate in the class. There are a limited number of spots available in the class.

- 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

125 Hunt Drive, Hubert, NC
(MAP)
- This is a 12 week class that will start on January 13 and will end on April 6 (I will be out of town on January 27, no class that day). This class is for older elementary - high school children.

We are so excited to announce that we are bringing in Dennis Parker, author of Jefferson's Masterpiece, for a presentation of the "Story of the Declaration of Independence." The program is based on his book which tells the story of why and how the Declaration of Independence was written and approved. Students will take a historic journey between June 11 and August 2, 1776. They will follow Thomas Jefferson as he works on the Declaration and carries out his daily activities, observe the proceedings and conflicts within the Second Continental Congress, and witness the military struggles between the America colonies and Great Britain. The author says, "It's a story every student should know."
Pre-Registration Deadline: February 20, 2012

Why Is the Story of the Declaration of Independence Important for Students?
Students will have a better understanding and appreciation of the United States of America and the meaning of freedom when they know and comprehend why and how the Declaration of Independence was written and approved, and why and how the American Revolution was fought and won. "Children should be educated and instructed in the prinicples of freedom," John Adams once said. The story of the Declaration of Independence should be a central component of that education.
Declaration of Independence Presentation
Dressed in 18th century-styled clothes, Mr. Parker presents students with the compelling story of the Declaration of Independence – how the Declaration was written, edited, approved and signed. Based upon his book, Jefferson’s Masterpiece, students learn what took place between June 11 and August 2, 1776. They follow Thomas Jefferson as he works on the Declaration and carries out his daily activities, observe the proceedings and conflicts within the Second Continental Congress, and witness the military struggles between the America colonies and Great Britain. Students will also learn that many signers suffered serious consequences for signing the Declaration of Independence. The students will feel part of the story.
