What is my first step to homeschooling in NC?
The first step is to complete a Notice of Intent to Operate a Home School and submit to the state. This form can be found on the website for the NC Department of Non-Public Education: www.ncdnpe.org.
Do I have to register my homeschool before I begin instruction or withdraw them from school?
According to the law in the state of NC, your student does not have to be enrolled in school until the age of 7. If your child is under 7, then it is not required for you be registered before beginning instruction or before withdrawing them from school. It will be EASIER to withdraw your student from a public school if you are already registered. If your student is 7 or older, then you are required to be registered before withdrawal from school and/or beginning instruction.
What about Driver's Education for my homeschooler?
At age 14 and 1/2 years you can register with the public school you are zoned to for your child to attend the Driver's Education course which is run by the NC DMV and is required to get a driving permit/license. Simply call the school to register your child for the next available class. Once your child is enrolled in the Driver's Education course, you can call the NC Division of Non-public Education (24 hours a day) at 919-733-4276. Press option #3 to obtain a Driving Eligibilty Certificate. They will give you a prompt asking you to leave the following information on the voicemail: The Name of the school, type of school (homeschool or conventional), name of the school's chief administrator, county of school, address of school, complete phone number where you can be contacted, and the number of DEC's your require. The Driver's Ed Course Completion Certificate and the Driving Eligibility Certificate will both be required (with birth certificate and SS card) when you go to the NC DMV for a permit.
