OfficeMax 'MaxPerks for Teachers'

OfficeMax offers a frequent buyer program called 'MaxPerks.'  For teachers and homeschoolers, the program is called 'MaxPerks for Teachers.'  Based on how much you purchase (make sure you present your MaxPerks card at the time of purchase) you will get bonus money off a future purchase based on how often and how much you purchase from their store.  They also encourage ink cartridge recycling by allowing $3.00/cartridge (up to a max of 5 per day=$15.00) off your purchase price.  The two programs work very well together and I strongly recommend taking advantage of both of them.

Lowe's Workshops

Lowe's offers free workshops for children at 10:00 AM on either the second or third Saturday of the month.  You must sign-up for these workshops in advance, but they are quite fun and educational for the children.  The number to Lowe's is (910) 938-9100.

Lutheran Church of Our Savior Food Bags

The Lutheran Church of Our Savior offers food bags to anyone interested every Monday morning at 10:00 AM.  There is no "qualifying" to receive these bags.  It is simply available to anyone who wants one.  The stipulation is that you get only one bag per month.  You will have to show identification at the time of pick up to ensure that you are getting only one bag that month.  The church is located at 1115 Lejeune Blvd. which is right beside Sanders Ford.

Storytime at the Library (Camp Lejeune)

A storytime program is available for preschool children at the Camp Lejeune Library every Thursday.  Two to three year olds are at 0930 and four to six year olds are at 1030.  Parents must attend with their children.  They read books, share flannel board stories, and crafts.

Cape Fear Museum--"Family Science Saturdays"

Cape Fear Museum is hosting "Family Science Saturdays."  These start at approximately 10:00 AM on Saturdays.  Admission is $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.  See the calendar page for dates of upcoming events.  If you are interested, your family can join the museum for $40.00 per year and then you would only have to pay the $2.00 admission price per person to participate in the "Family Science Saturdays."  For more information go to their website capefearmuseum.com or call them (910) 798-4362.

Wilmington Ice House

We have been and will be visiting the Wilmington Ice House on a regular basis.  They have a discounted price for homeschoolers of $5.00 per person and we want to support their efforts.  If you visit their website wilmingtononice.com and join their mailing list, they will send you two free admission tickets.

Let's Say Thanks

I wanted to encourage everyone to visit www.LetsSayThanks.com and send a postcard to U.S. servicemen and women that are away from home defending our freedom.  There is a way to print a postcard also and send it to a specific person if you want.  Details are on the website, but it's a great activity for us and the children.

P.A.R.E.N.T.S.S.

P.A.R.E.N.T.S.S. is a support/fun group for those with special needs as well as their families.  They do activites such as softball and bowling which involve the entire family.  There are trophies and t-shirts issued and it is great for their self-esteem and self-reliance.  For more information, contact Laura Quinn.  Address: 168 Balsam Road, Jacksonville, NC  28546.  Phone: 910-455-9539.

Books-A-Million

Take your NC Homeschooler card and ask for a Community Discount Program application.  Fill it out and leave it at the store.  They will mail you a discount card with your homeschool name on it.  This card will get you a 20% discount on anything in the store.

Step Ahead Gymnastics--Homeschool Class

Homeschool Class on Thursdays at 11:00 AM-12:00 PM.  Registration is $35.00 and the price is $40 per month.  The class is currently open to 5-12 year olds.  Please call them for more information:  938-STEP (7837).

Dial-A-Story

The Camp Lejeune Library features a dial-a-story that changes every two days.  The number is 451-3442.  This is great to keep toddlers occupied for a few minutes!

Senior Bingo

Volunteer to help out with senior bingo!  They play every Friday morning at 10:00 AM at the Senior Services Center on Hwy. 258.  Some of these seniors need help reading their cards or marking their cards.  They have said they would completely enjoy children coming and helping out.

Home Depot Wood-Working Classes

On the first Saturday of each month, Home Depot offers a wood-working class for children.  The classes are free and begin at 9:00 AM until about 12:00 PM.  They get a little work apron, a pin and a certificate for completing the project.  The project is child-friendly and doesn't take that long AND they get to take it home.
